Irish Press, 15 August 1991 Tasting
oysters on their home ground Whose idea it was to go paddling I don't remember, but it was a very good one. We congregated at the bridge of Claren in County Galway at around 2am and set ourselves the arduous taks of fording the river in our bare feet over sharp stones, without spilling a drop from our glasses of wine. Willie Moran and Norbert Fallon (of Moran's of the Weir and Paddy Burke's) created a major impact when they started drenching each other. No professional rivalry, I'm sure. Both are important parts of the Clarenbridge Oyster Festival and have displayed an inherent ability for enjoyment which could leave their customers standing.... ....My favourite Clarenbridge story is the one about the Emperor and Empress of Japan. They were to have lunch in Moran's of the Weir and Willie Moran and his staff were given scrupulous details as to how to behave with the royal heads. After all these people's ancestors were considered gods by their subjects in times past. Everyone was instructed on how they should bow to the imperial guests, and under no circumstances should they make actual physical contact. But the Foreign Affairs department had reckoned without Willie's 83 year old father Michael. The fleet of motorcycle cops arrived, followed by stretch limousines. The emporer and empress emerged. The line of staff from Moran's was ready to greet them. Then suddenly Michael steps forward and say: 'Howya ma'am, Jeyes you're more than welcome"....
