Bit of the Brew A pub tour through the Emerald Isle is one of the most charming ways to experience Irish hospitality first-hand. The best way to enjoy a trip to Ireland is to do as the Irish do - patronise a few pubs. From the moment you step off the plane at Dublin or Shannon, and no matter where you go, pubs are a focal point, a common ground for locals and visitors alike. And with almost 10,000 pubs at last count, good choices are at every turn..... ...Judging from the guest book, many a prime minister and movie star have followed the twisting country lane to Moran's Oyster Cottage, a 225-year-old thatched-roof pub about an hour's drive north of Shannon. And it's not just a thirst that draws visitors from all walks of life. Moran's is known first and foremost for its nautical traditions and excellent seafood - succulent Galway Bay oysters plucked from the waters outside, fresh salmon, prawns, and crab claws, all accompanied by heaping platters of freshly baked brown bread. This pub exudes a homey ambience. You'll be greeted by Michael Moran or his son Willy, the sixth and seventh generations of Morans to keep this pub. On cool days, you can amble into one of the cozy snugs or sit by the open fireplace. When the weather is warm, take a place at one of the outdoor tables. If your timing is right, lean back, relax, and "watch the sun go down on Galway Bay." It's no wonder that most visitors to Ireland, before they ever see a shamrock or kiss the Blarney Stone, invariably seek out the nearest pub - and the chance to experience a real slice of Irish lifestyle.
